Valencia College plans Apopka, Poinciana campuses Comments 0

Valencia College is planning two new campuses — one in Apopka and another in Poinciana.

The growing state college, already one of the nation's largest in terms of enrollment, will soon be asking the state for permission to build a campus in Apopka before the 2015-16 school year, college records show.

This week, Valencia's Board of Trustees gave the college permission to start looking for land for the Apopka campus, which would likely be built in phases on 20 to 30 acres.

A timeline for the Poinciana campus is in the works. Officials will present more details on that plan in the coming months, when they will ask the Board of Trustees for permission to acquire property in Poinciana, located in southernOsceola County.

President Sandy Shugart said Valencia is among the state's neediest colleges in terms of classroom space and other facilities. Thanks to enrollment spurts in recent years, state calculations show that Valencia has less than 40 percent of the space it needs, Shugart said.

The college already is expanding. A campus going up in Lake Nona will be completed by next fall. Today, officials will break ground on a new, four-story building on theKissimmee campus.
